The first continuation is called with the size of the left tree, and the second is called with the size of the right tree. Finally, you add the results and call the original continuation cont. Calling size on an unbalanced tree such as tree6 now succeeds: > size tree6;; val it : int = 50001 How did you turn a tree walk into a tail-recursive algorithm The answer lies in the fact that continuations are function objects, which are allocated on the garbage-collected heap. Effectively, you ve generated a work list represented by objects, rather than keeping a work list via a stack of function invocations. As it happens, using a continuation for both the right and left trees is overkill, and you can use an accumulating parameter for one side. This leads to a more efficient implementation because each continuation function object is likely to involve one allocation (short-lived allocations such as continuation objects are very cheap but not as cheap as not allocating at all!).
