Deploying CalDAV accounts for iCal is pretty straightforward. Also accessed through the ManagedClient manifest (as with Mail before it), iCal is only possible to leverage managed preferences to deploy a single account. It allows for specifying account name, server address, and SSL, as well as a few lesser used settings. Figure 7-6 is a screenshot of a configured iCal preference manifest, deployed at the Often level.

The third and final type of push notification is the raw notification, which can be used to continuously send messages or updates to a Windows Phone 7 application that is running in the foreground. Contrast this with toast and tile notifications, which are used to send updates to an application when it is not running front and center on the Windows Phone 7 device. Unlike toast and tile notifications, all raw notifications are dropped once an application is no longer running in the foreground on the Windows Phone 7 device. Raw notifications are an energy-friendly alternative to constantly polling web services for data; this type of push notification also eliminates the need to keep connections to web services open for prolonged periods of time. Each notification type has its niche, so to speak, or the specific application development scenarios it shines with more than the others. For instance, if an application receives updates only when it s actively used, such as a chat application, then a raw notification is the most appropriate mechanism for transmitting these updates. If an application is ideally suited to communicate updates via the use of visual elements on an ongoing basis, such as weather updates, sports events scores, or stock prices, tile applications are a more appropriate choice. Finally, if text-based messages are the most appropriate form of communication on an around-the-clock basis, such as e-mail receipts, Facebook friend requests, or news alerts, toast notifications would be most suitable. Having taken a look at three available push notification types, let s turn our attention to the architecture of notification services, since knowing the architecture will help you better understand how to program and troubleshoot push notification services. We discussed URL encoding in 2 briefly, but we wanted to emphasize the necessity of encoding URLs to resources within the portlet application. The portal may need additional information on the URL to identify which portlet on the page the resource is associated with, especially if there are two instances of the same portlet for a user. If the user s browser does not support cookies, the portal may need to rewrite the URL with the current session ID. The encodeURL() method on PortletResponse takes the path to a resource inside the portlet application. The path may be either an absolute path to a resource on the server, or a full URL with the scheme, server, port (if necessary), and path.

Up to this point, we ve discussed creating rules and checking the logs for attempts to access resources that match the rules. But none of the rules that have been created will still be active on the next restart. When using ipfw interactively, any rule changes that are made to the ipfw rule set are not saved on the next reboot. Experimenting with firewall rules can cause harsh problems on systems if done without taking precautions. So, it is a good idea to avoid applying rules permanently until you are savvy enough to remove them if you get into trouble. When your computer is booted up and ipfw first starts, it processes the ipfw.conf file. To make these changes persistent, you need to update this .conf file. But, before we jump into that, let s discuss how to get yourself out of a jam if you make a mistake. In the ipfw.conf file, there is a significant amount of commented-out text that tells you the proper syntax to use in the file. This is a way for you to undo what you ve done. To exclude or comment text out from /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf, you need to add # in front of the rule. Adding # in front of a rule tells the system not to process the rule when booting. NOTE: If you do not see a /etc folder on the root of your boot volume, then cd to the /private folder, and then look for the /etc folder in that directory. Anytime you change your ipfw.conf file, you should back it up first. You can and probably should keep multiple versioned backups as you edit the ipfw.conf file. Once you update the ipfw.conf file and save it, you will need to restart ipfw for the changes to take effect. Don t forget to scan blocked ports to verify your changes were applied and are correct after restarting the firewall.
