Although application signing is utilized very heavily by the iPhone and iPod Touch, it s utilization in Mac OS X is a little less prolific. As of 10.5, Apple has digitally signed all applications that it ships. However, the system facilities that actually utilize application signing is fairly minimal, and this certainly is the weak link in Apple s system: it has an excellent foundation laid that allows it to enforce extremely tight controls in the OS. When we view the iPhone OS for instance, we find a system that is 100% reliant on application signing. In such a case, Apple serves as the root authority, and as such has complete control over all applications that are allowed to run on the platform. This has proven to be a very effective system, providing a near-ironclad guard against malware on the platform. Interestingly enough, the act of jail-breaking an iPhone involves circumventing and ultimately disabling the signing system. This is done not by attacking the signing system itself, but by penetrating the OS through some other means to disable it altogether. Also interesting to note is that the only iPhone malware in the wild the iKee and Duh worms target jail-broken devices. In OS 10.5 and 10.6, we have seen much more minimal implementation of the technology, and for good reason. OS X is a long-standing system, with a history of a completely open architecture; any application that is compiled on OS X can be executed and run by the user. Apple certainly couldn t get away with implementing the same measures as the iPhone with OS X, as in essence the iPhone model is the antithesis of OS X s traditional model. The iPhone itself has seen a decent amount of outcry due to its highly restrictive system; OS X certainly wouldn t be very well received if it required that all applications be signed.
