APPENDIX QUICK REFERENCE
While the HttpChannel class implements both the sending and receiving part of a channel, the HttpClientChannel class only implements the client-side part of the channel. By default, all messages are passed through the SOAP formatter, which means that messages are transmitted via SOAP/XML to the server. Usage example: HttpClientChannel channel = new HttpClientChannel("My Client Channel", null); ChannelServices.RegisterChannel(channel); Configuration example: <configuration> <system.runtime.remoting> <channelSinkProviders> <channel type="System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.Http.HttpChannel, System.Runtime.Remoting" id="httpbinary" > <clientProviders> <formatter type="System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels. BinaryClientFormatterSinkProvider, System.Runtime.Remoting" /> </clientProviders> </channel> </channels> <application> <channels> <channel ref="httpbinary" /> </channels> <client>
recognizes (correctly) that multiblock reads could take longer than single-block reads. If you are planning to upgrade from 8i to 9i (or 8i to 10g), make sure you enable CPU costing from day one of your regression testing there will be some surprises waiting for you. A final consideration when examining this formula is that there is no explicit mention of any components relating to the time spent on the I/O that can result from merge joins, hash joins, or sorting. In all three cases, Oracle uses direct path writes and reads with sizes that usually have nothing to do with the normal multiblock read size so neither mreadtim nor sreadtim would seem to be entirely appropriate.
Assume you re working for AdventureWorks Incorporated as a developer. You have been assigned the task of developing a report that will list all the products with their respective reorder points. The report should meet all characteristics described in Table 4-3, and the report output should match Figure 4-11. Table 4-3. Report Characteristics
Another of the special cases comes into play with large numbers of tables where large means at least seven. As it works through possible join orders, the optimizer simply ignores, and doesn t even list, any that would require too many Cartesian joins (other than single-row Cartesian joins). The parameter _optimizer_search_limit seems to be the parameter that controls the limit on the number of Cartesian joins allowed, and has a default value of 5. Of course, it is instructive to see what happens if you give Oracle a query that joins seven tables, with no scope for anything other than Cartesian joins all the way. There is a lot more to investigate in the 10053 trace in particular the information it gives you with more complex SQL statements that require the optimizer to evaluate subplans for several transformations of your query, and then consider various optional execution mechanisms such as star joins. And I haven t even mentioned what goes on when you use the first_rows(N) optimization hint. But I have to leave something for volumes 2 and 3.
Although this seems pretty simple, it is complicated by client-access policy permissions. In the same way that a Silverlight application can call a web service on a separate domain only if it has the proper client-access policy permissions, a Silverlight application can call a socket server only if that server contains the proper client-access policy permissions. The following is an example of a client-access policy for a socket server: < xml version="1.0" encoding ="utf-8" > <access-policy> <cross-domain-access> <policy> <allow-from> <domain uri="*" /> </allow-from> <grant-to> <socket-resource port="4500-4550" protocol="tcp" /> </grant-to> </policy> </cross-domain-access> </access-policy> Recall that when you re using a web service, the client-access policy is contained in a file named clientaccesspolicy.xml, which is placed in the domain s root. In a socket access situation, things are a bit more complex. Before Silverlight will make a socket request to a server on whatever port is requested by the application, it will first make a socket request of its own to the server on port 943, requesting a policy file. Therefore, your server must have a socket service set up to listen to requests on port 943 and serve up the contents of the client-access policy in order for Silverlight applications to be able to make a socket connection.
Inheritance
The Dock property allows you to attach a control to one of the edges of its parent. The term parent applies to Windows Forms, because Windows Forms contain the controls that you drag and drop on them. By default, the Dock property of any control is set to None. For example, a control docked to the top edge of a form will always be connected to the top edge of the form, and it will automatically resize in the left and right directions when its parent is resized. The Dock property for a control can be set by using the provided graphical interface in the Properties window as shown in Figure 14-11.
