5. The next join we look at is an OUTER JOIN, more specifically a LEFT OUTER JOIN. In this instance, we want to return all the rows in the left table, whether there is any data in the right table or not. The left table in this case is the ShareDetails.Shares, table as it is the left named table of the two we are concerned with. Enter the following code: SELECT s.ShareDesc,sp.Price,sp.PriceDate FROM ShareDetails.Shares s LEFT OUTER JOIN ShareDetails.SharePrices sp ON sp.ShareId = s.ShareId 6. Once you execute this code, you should see the missing shares from the previous example listed, as you see in Figure 11-3. Notice that where no data exists in the ShareDetails.SharePrices table, the values are displayed as NULL. OUTER JOINS are a good tool when checking other queries. For example, the results in Figure 11-3 demonstrate that quite rightly, the bottom three shares should have been missing in the first example, as they did not meet our criteria. This may not be so obvious when there are large volumes of data though.

One day in the somewhat distant future, smartphones and other mobile appliances will ship with batteries that last for weeks without the need to recharge them. But until that day arrives, Windows Phone 7 software developers write applications that use energy sparingly, since a resource-intensive program such as one that uses the built-in cellular or Wi-Fi radio continuously can quickly drain a Windows Phone battery. To prevent this from happening, Microsoft has built a number of safeguards into the Windows Phone application platform to ensure that the phone battery lasts as long as possible. One such safeguard prohibits any third-party application from running in the background while another is executing in the foreground, a feature that is also known as multitasking. Given this limitation, how do you build an application that needs to be or at least appears to be always running, providing your users with important alerts and messages, such as when to buy or sell stocks or run from bad weather In the Windows Phone 7 world, the answer is push notifications, also referred to as Windows Phone Notifications (WPN). In a nutshell, push notifications allow a user of an application to receive notification messages even when it is not running (currently on Windows Phone 7, anytime an application is not in the foreground, it is not running). In this chapter, you ll learn how notifications work on the Windows Phone, the WPN types that Microsoft provides, and the steps you need to follow to use them in an application. You will build a simple phone application that can receive and process push notifications, and you ll create a simple service that can create and send them. The service will notify the user when the price of Microsoft stock changes (stock symbol MSFT). Without further ado, let s go ahead and start experimenting with this powerful technology available for Windows Phone 7.

The Table Looping and Table Extractor functoids are used together. As an example, suppose that you have the sample input document shown in Listing 3 5. Listing 3 5. Flattened Input Structure <AliasesFlat> <Names> <Alias1FirstName>John</Alias1FirstName> <Alias1LastName>Doe</Alias1LastName> <Alias2FirstName>Sam</Alias2FirstName> <Alias2LastName>Smith</Alias2LastName> <Alias3FirstName>James</Alias3FirstName> <Alias3LastName>Jones</Alias3LastName> </Names> </AliasesFlat> The goal is to use these two functoids to create an output document of the format shown in Listing 3 6. Listing 3 6. Repeating Nested Structure <AliasesRepeating> <AliasNames> <FirstName>John</FirstName> <LastName>Doe</LastName> </AliasNames> <AliasNames> <FirstName>Sam</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> </AliasNames> <AliasNames> <FirstName>James</FirstName> <LastName>Jones</LastName> </AliasNames> </AliasesRepeating> Figure 3 24 shows the configuration for the input parameters for the Table Looping functoid. The first parameter is a reference to the node structure Names in the input schema. The second parameter is a constant value of 2 indicating there will be two columns in the table. The remaining parameters are the first and last name of each alias from the input document.

The portlet container passes the portlet request and response objects to the portlet whenever the portlet handles a request. Both the render() and processAction() methods on a portlet take portlet request and response objects as arguments. The portlet can get details about the client s request, access information about the state of the portlet, and query the portlet for details of its configuration from the portlet request object. Two different request objects are used in the portlet API. One is an object that implements the ActionRequest interface, which is an argument to the portlet s processAction() method. The other is a RenderRequest object, which the portlet

Figure 2-6. Dragging and dropping a dockable window If you so choose, you may also convert any dockable window into a tabbed document. Tabbed document is the term used to describe any window that is open in the middle of the IDE. For example, when you double-click a code file in the Solution Explorer, it opens up in the middle of the IDE as a tabbed document. To try this, right-click the title bar of any dockable window and select Tabbed Document. To make the window dockable again, simply right-click and select Dockable. At this point, we will leave you to experiment with this. Next, we ll take a thorough look at all the windows available within the IDE to understand the important role that each will play in our development. We ll begin with one of the most important windows, the Solution Explorer.
