Permitting users to upload their avatar images to your server is by far the most convenient method for your users. In order for this option to work, you must make sure the upload directory you ve specified (typically images/avatars) is writable by the web server; otherwise, your users will have problems uploading files. This option is less than desirable if your server is strapped for disk space. You can specify a hard limit on the size of files uploaded to your server under the Avatar Settings section in the Configuration page of the Administration panel. Enabling remote avatars permits users to link to images hosted on other servers as their avatar image. This approach helps take the load off your server, but there is an increasing resistance against cross-linking images from other servers. More and more hosts use serverbased measures to prevent hotlinking from their servers. To add insult to injury, phpBB does

Like magic. You went through lots of screens, but wrote no code at all. Pretty cool! The magic happens because of the objects created for you, represented by the icons in the tray (see Figure 9-11). The details are well beyond the scope of this book, but let s look at some of the basic aspects of the objects in the tray and how they work together.

True if a value is in a list. The list can be the result of a subquery.
If you are using the same XPath expression again and again, you can improve the performance of your code by using the Compile() method of the XPathNavigator class. This method accepts an XPath expression as a string, compiles it, and returns an instance of the XPathExpression class. This instance can then be supplied to the Select() and SelectSingleNode() methods. To see the Compile() method in action, you need to modify the example that we developed for selecting nodes (see the Selecting Nodes section). The modified code is given in Listing 4-5. Listing 4-5. Using XPathExpression and the Compile() Method private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { XPathDocument doc = new XPathDocument(Application.StartupPath + @"\employees.xml"); XPathNavigator navigator = doc.CreateNavigator(); XPathExpression expression = navigator.Compile(textBox1.Text); XPathNodeIterator iterator = navigator.Select(expression); try { ... Note the lines marked in bold. The code creates an instance of the XPathExpression class by calling the Compile() method of XPathNavigator. This XPathExpression instance is then passed to the Select() method. The rest of the code of the application remains unchanged. You can pass the same XPathExpression instance to any number of Select() or SelectSingleNode() calls.

The .NET type system makes some additional distinctions between types that are occasionally significant for F# programming: Delegate types: Delegate types such as System.Windows.Forms.MouseEventHandler are a form of named function type supported by all .NET languages. They tend not to be as convenient to use as F# function types, because they don t support compositional operations such as pipelining and forward composition. However, .NET APIs use delegates extensively. To create a delegate value, you name the delegate type and pass it a function value that accepts the same arguments expected by the delegate type, such as MouseEventHandler(fun sender args -> printf "click!\n"). Attribute types: Types derived from the System.Attribute class are used to add metadata to source-code declarations and typically end in the suffix Attribute. You can access these attributes via .NET and F# reflection. You can add attributes to F# declarations using the [<...>] syntax. For example, System.ObsoleteAttribute marks a function as obsolete, and the F# compiler produces a warning if the function is used. Exception types: Types derived from the System.Exception class are used to represent raised exceptions. 4 discussed exceptions in detail. Enum types: .NET enum types are simple integer-like value types associated with a particular name. They re typically used for specifying flags to APIs; for example, FileMode in the System.IO namespace is an enum type with values such as FileMode.Open and FileMode.Create. .NET enum types are easy to use from F# and can be combined using bitwise AND, OR, and XOR operations using the &&&, |||, and ^^^ operators. Most commonly, the ||| operator is used to combine multiple flags. On occasion, you may have to mask an attribute value using &&& and compare the result to enum 0. You see how to define .NET-compatible enum types in F# at the end of 6.
Instead of using Activator.GetObject() and passing a URL to it, you can use the new operator after loading the configuration file with RemotingConfiguration.Configure(). In terms of the sample application in 2, this means that instead of the following call: ICustomerManager mgr = (ICustomerManager) Activator.GetObject( typeof(ICustomerManager), "http://localhost:1234/CustomerManager.soap"); you might simply use this statement after the configuration file has been loaded: CustomerManager mgr = new CustomerManager() And here the problem starts: you need the definition of the class CustomerManager on the client. The interface is not sufficient anymore, because you cannot use IInterface x = new IInterface(), as this would represent the instantiation of an interface, which is not possible. In 3, I showed you several tools for supplying the necessary metadata in a shared assembly: interfaces, abstract base classes, and SoapSuds-generated metadata-only assemblies. When using the configured new operator, you won t be able to employ abstract base classes or interfaces instead you basically have to resort to shipping the implementation or using SoapSuds-generated metadata.
The AirPort can also restrict computers that are allowed to log in to it based on the MAC address of each client computer. The MAC address is a unique address on a network adapter (either wireless or wired) that is stamped by the vendor during assembly and is unique to the card. There should never be two cards with the same address. By using the actual hardware address of a computer to decide whether the computer can log in to the wireless network, a second layer of security is added to the wireless network (encrypted passwords providing the first layer, as discussed earlier). To filter by MAC address, it is important to find the AirPort ID (the MAC address on a Mac) of each computer. This is located on the Network pane of System Preferences on the client computer. Clicking the Network tab, then clicking on the AirPort tab, and then clicking on the Advanced tab at the bottom opens a list of various protocols that the
