I do not recommend using the NUMTOYMINTERVAL function. The reason has to do with how the functions behave at the months end. The ADD_MONTHS function treats the end of month days specially. It will, in effect, round the dates for us if we add one month to a month that has 31 days and the next month has fewer than 31 days, ADD_MONTHS will return the last day of the next month. Additionally, adding one month to the last day of a month results in the last day of the next month. We see this when adding one month to a month with 30 or fewer days: ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> alter session set nls_date_format = "dd-mon-yyyy hh24:mi:ss"; Session altered. ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> select dt, add_months(dt,1) 2 from (select to_date("29-feb-2000","dd-mon-yyyy") dt from dual ) 3 / DT ADD_MONTHS(DT,1) -------------------- -------------------29-feb-2000 00:00:00 31-mar-2000 00:00:00 ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> select dt, add_months(dt,1) 2 from (select to_date("28-feb-2001","dd-mon-yyyy") dt from dual ) 3 / DT ADD_MONTHS(DT,1) -------------------- -------------------28-feb-2001 00:00:00 31-mar-2001 00:00:00 ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> select dt, add_months(dt,1) 2 from (select to_date("30-jan-2001","dd-mon-yyyy") dt from dual ) 3 / DT ADD_MONTHS(DT,1) -------------------- -------------------30-jan-2001 00:00:00 28-feb-2001 00:00:00

The really interesting challenge, however, is that Web Services can t serialize a List<T> into XML; so back in ProjectData, the List<ProjectResourceData> field is exposed as a property using the following code: public ProjectResourceData[] ProjectResources { get { if (_resources.Count > 0) return _resources.ToArray(); return null; } set { _resources = new List<ProjectResourceData>(value); } } Notice how this property exposes an array of type ProjectResourceData externally, but maintains a List<ProjectResourceData> internally. It is easier to deal with a List<T> than an array, which is why the internal representation is a List<T>. This is also why the AddResource() method is used to add elements to the List<ProjectResourceData> field. Since that field is never exposed publicly as a List<T>, there s no way for the GetProject() method to directly add items to the list. Back in GetProject(), the resulting ProjectData, along with its list of ProjectResourceData objects, is returned to the consumer as a result: return result; As with all the other web methods, this one implements exception handling to rethrow any exceptions so the exception message text is provided to the consumer for its use. At this point, you should understand how to create component-based or API-style web methods. And you should understand how to create service-oriented, message-based web methods. You can look at the rest of the code in the code download for this book. The result is that you now have a web service interface to some of the ProjectTracker functionality. Consumers can now call these web methods to interact with the application s business logic and data. These consumers may be running on any hardware platform or OS, and may be written in virtually any programming language. Those details don t matter in any meaningful way. The important thing is that any consumers will interact with the ProjectTracker data through the business logic in the business objects, including validation, authentication, and authorization thereby making it difficult for a consumer to misuse the data or functionality.

It is imperative that certain types of objects be allowed to clean up and free the unmanaged resources they are holding. The using statement is used to simplify the process and ensure that these resources are properly disposed of. A resource is a class or struct that implements the System.IDisposable interface. Interfaces are covered in detail in 17 but in short, an interface is a collection of unimplemented function members that classes and structs can choose to implement. The IDisposable interface contains a single method named Dispose. The phases of using a resource are shown in Figure 9-10, and consist of the following: Allocating the resource Using the resource Disposing of the resource If an unexpected runtime error occurs during the portion of the code using the resource, the code disposing of the resource might not get executed.

Gets or sets the audio frame size in milliseconds (default value is 1000 milliseconds). Mainly used in sampling the raw audio using the AudioSink class. Gets or sets the audio format as an AudioFormat object for the captured audio device. Default is null reference. The AudioFormat class provides the specific technical details such as BitsPerSample, Channels, SamplesPerSecond, and WaveFormat of the audio format. Returns a generic collection of the AudioFormat objects detailing supported audio formats for the captured audio device.

Summary of Parameter Types
To load the data file, we specify CHAR(1000000) on column COMMENTS since SQLLDR defaults to CHAR(255) for any input field as discussed previously. The CHAR(1000000) will allow SQLLDR to handle up to 1,000,000 bytes of input text. You must set this to a value that is larger than any expected chunk of text in the input file. Reviewing the loaded data, we see the following: ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> select comments from dept; COMMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------This is the Consulting Office in Virginia This is the Finance Office in Virginia, it has embedded commas and is much longer than the other comments field. If you feel the need to add double quoted text in here like this: "You will need to double up those quotes!" to preserve them in the string. This field keeps going for up to 1000000 bytes or until we hit the magic end of record marker, the | followed by an end of line - it is right here -> This is the Sales Office in Virginia This is the Accounting Office in Virginia The one thing to observe here is that the doubled-up quotes are no longer doubled up. SQLLDR removed the extra quotes we placed there.
