If you take the key features of the .NET and the mediation between managed and unmanaged code, you have the foundation for building a lot of different technologies. All you need is a legion of programmers to build some cool stuff. Microsoft has that legion of programmers and they have been busy. There are so many different technologies included in, associated with, or available for the .NET Framework that it can be hard to know where to start. Figure 3-3 shows the six high-level building blocks that you will be looking at in this book. These are the key .NET technologies, but there are others for more specific or advanced problems. And although Figure 3-3 shows a nice division of responsibility between each of these building blocks, the reality is that there is a lot of interdependency between these technologies. For example, the Language Integrated Query (LINQ) feature allows you to query data using data models created using the ADO.NET feature called the Entity Framework and can also be used with the Task Parallel support to parallel process queries. I ll give a brief description of each of these building blocks and tell you which chapters relate to them.

It should be configurable through properties so that individual instances of the activity can be customized to do what they need to do. It should be as atomic as makes sense. Don t lump functionality together in a single activity even if they always go together. A good way to think about this is, How would I explain this to my manager In the CRM example earlier, a GetCRMData and a SetCRMData activity make sense, even though each is composed of perhaps dozens of subtasks (connect to CRM, authenticate, pass parameters, query data, etc.). The get/set boundary is a good, logical breakdown for the functionality. Organizations should look to develop a solid library of custom activities over time. The ability to easily develop custom activities is one of the strongest features of WF, and smart companies will carefully build on this strength.

All of the WebClient examples so far in this section have been synchronous, meaning that the code doesn t continue executing until the request to the server has been completed. WebClient also supports asynchronous requests where you are notified that a request is completed through an event. Listing 21-5 contains an example. Listing 21-5. Using WebClient to Asynchronously Request Data using System; using System.Net; class Listing 05 { static void Main(string[] args) { // create a new WebClient objecty WebClient myWebClient = new WebClient(); // subscribe to an event myWebClient.DownloadStringCompleted += (sender, eventArgs) => { // write out the first part of the string Console.WriteLine("--- Async Result ---"); Console.WriteLine(eventArgs.Result.Substring(0, 50)); }; // make an asynchronous request myWebClient.DownloadStringAsync(new Uri("")); // do some other work while the request is being performed in the background for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { Console.WriteLine("Doing other work...{0}", i); } // wait for input before exiting Console.WriteLine("Press enter to finish"); Console.ReadLine(); } } Listing 21-5 uses a lambda expression to subscribe to the DownloadStringCompleted event in the WebClient object before calling the DownloadStringAsync method. The DownloadStringAsync method takes a System.Uri parameter. The simplest way to create an Uri is to use the constructor that takes a string parameter whose value is the URL you want to retrieve. The DownloadStringAsync method returns immediately, and the request is performed in the background. In Listing 21-5, a for loop simulates a program doing other work while the request is being handled. When the request has been completed and the result converted into a string, the lambda expression is called. The parameters passed to the lambda expression are the WebClient that has performed the request and a DownloadStringCompletedEventArgs object; the Result property returns the

Compares two instance of T for quality; returns true if they are equal, false otherwise. Returns an int hash code for an instance of T. The hash code must be consistent with the Equals method so that if two instances of T are reported as equal, the GetHashCode method should return the same hash code for both of them.
Many of the language enhancements we have looked at so far can greatly ease working with legacy code such as COM objects. Let s look in more detail as to by adapting an example from Scott Hansleman s blog (www.hanselman. com/blog/CLRAndDLRAndBCLOhMyWhirlwindTourAroundNET4AndVisualStudio2010Beta1.aspx).
An array element is accessed using an integer value as an index into the array. Each dimension uses 0-based indexing. The index is placed between square brackets following the array name. The following code shows examples of declaring, writing to, and reading from a onedimensional and a two-dimensional array: int[] intArr1 = new int[15]; intArr1[2] = 10; int var1 = intArr1[2]; // 1-D example // Write to element 2 of the array. // Read from element 2 of the array.
