Likewise, the RowDefinition class has a property named Height. These properties are of type GridLength, a special class that provides capabilities beyond a simple double value representing size. In XAML, the Width and Height properties can be set to the special value Auto, which is the default value. The Auto value causes the row/column to size automatically to the largest piece of content. More sophisticated control over space is provided by something known as star sizing. The Width and Height properties can be set to the special value *, or a star, with a number in front, such as 2* or 3*. This syntax gives a proportional amount of the available space to a row or a column. Figure 3-5 shows a grid with a single row and two columns given the star sizes * and 2*.

intensive. So it would seem that applying the Pipes and Filters pattern would be inappropriate because it would involve either streaming GUI controls or passing a modifiable control structure from one chain element to another. The solution is to bring the two approaches together and use black boxes to encapsulate blocks of functionality. This solution is based on a two-tier approach, with the first tier being illustrated in Figure 4-3.

Finally, you need to tell the remoting subsystem which specific class and DLL this URL refers to. The type attribute is somewhat cryptic because it accepts a string that contains the full name (including namespaces) of the class, a comma, and then the name of the assembly (DLL) that contains the class. Note that the assembly name doesn t include the .dll extension. With the well-known endpoint defined, clients can call the server. However, to allow for full serialization of complex object graphs, remoting must be told to allow any type to be serialized. This is the purpose behind the XML in the <channels> element. This XML sets the typeFilterLevel attribute to Full for both the SoapFormatter and BinaryFormatter in the .NET Framework. As these are the two formatters supported by remoting, this ensures that all serializable objects can flow through to the data portal.

CHAPTER 10 NAMESPACES AND ASSEMBLIES
If you want to have any free time (or even a life) as a DBA, it is imperative that you develop a good working relationship with the developers you will be tasked to support. It will make your life easier and their lives easier. One of the interesting aspects about the job of a developer is that it is often a career path about growth and change leading out. There isn t usually an up that lets you stay a developer. The idea is that after you have learned and mastered good techniques for writing clear, maintainable, and scalable applications, you should desire to move on in your career. You should want to become a DBA, or technical or team lead, or a person in the upper echelons of management. But definitely now that you have mastered the art of development, you are seen as unambitious if you wish to remain a developer. Counterintuitive, isn t it We don t tell engineers that once they ve mastered the art of building safely structured bridges, they should no longer be doing that type of work. Nor do we tell architects that once they have a few buildings under their belt, it s time to move on to managing other architects. However, developers who do good work are told that they should really want to do other things, do more, and move out of their comfort zone, so to speak. Leave that development work for the young guys. Don t tell people your age if you re still doing development work. It s funny that development work is seen as work for the younger generation. Yet it takes years of hard work to become good at it. Then once you re good at it, you should become a DBA, or consultant, or team lead of some kind, or senior manager, or CIO. But one thing is clear. You should not remain a developer, no matter how good you are. One positive note to mention here is that if you are a DBA who has ever developed, and was a good developer, you are the perfect mentor for the developers you are tasked to support. So, how do you go about forging a partnership between the DBA team and the development team Forging any
