float4 final3DPos = inPos; final3DPos.y += heights.x; final3DPos.y += heights.y; final3DPos.y += heights.z; final3DPos.y += heights.w; float4x4 preViewProjection = mul(xView, xProjection); float4x4 preWorldViewProjection = mul(xWorld, preViewProjection); Output.Position = mul(final3DPos, preWorldViewProjection); float4 final3DPosW = mul(final3DPos, xWorld); Output.Pos3D = final3DPosW; This effectively elevates the 3D position of your vertex to the correct height. Once you know the final 3D position of your vertex, you re ready to transform it to its 2D screen position as usual. In this effect, your pixel shader will need to know the 3D position as well, so you pass the 3D world position to the pixel shader (because the Output.Position is not accessible in the pixel shader).

As the name implies the singleton design pattern is designed to restrict instantiation of a class to one, and only one, object. This is quite useful when only one instance of a particular class is needed. A good example would be a data class; such a class usually contains all the data to be used across the entire application. There is no need for more than one instance of such a class, so it makes sense to make it a singleton. Singletons are also useful when you want to have access to a lot of data globally throughout your application. Instead of having a lot of different global variables, you can have just one singleton and have all of your variables in it. Those variables are then accessible globally by accessing the singleton. We actually made use of a singleton when we created the DataFactory back in 8 for this exact reason; that is, we wanted to keep track of the video data throughout the application, so instead of making each of those variables globally accessible, we just accessed them via a singleton.

On the surface, it seems like maintaining a set of globally available information is easy just use a static field and be done with it. Unfortunately, things are quite a bit more complex when building a framework that must operate in a multi-threaded server environment. Remember that the serverside components of the data portal may run in ASP .NET on an IIS server when either .NET Remoting or Web Services are used as a network channel. And in the future, WCF (Indigo) will run in a similar server configuration. In these cases, the server may be supporting many clients at the same time. All the client requests are handled by the same Windows process and by the same .NET AppDomain. It turns out that static fields exist at the AppDomain level: meaning that a given static field is shared across all threads in an AppDomain. This is problematic, because multiple client requests are handled within the same AppDomain, but on different threads. So static fields aren t the answer. The solution is different in ASP.NET and in any other .NET code. Either way, the .NET framework illustrates the right answer. Look at CurrentPrincipal: it is associated with the current Thread object, which provides an answer for any code running outside of ASP.NET. Within ASP.NET, there s the HttpContext object, which is automatically maintained by ASP.NET itself. So when outside ASP.NET, the answer is to associate the context data directly with the current Thread object, and when inside ASP.NET, the context data can be stored using the HttpContext. Let s discuss the Thread option first. While the .NET Thread object already has a property for CurrentPrincipal, it doesn t have a property for CslaContext. But it does have a concept called named slots. Every Thread object has a collection associated with it. Each entry in this collection is referred to as a slot. Slots can be referred to by a key, or name: hence the term named slot. The GetNameDataSlot() method on the Thread object returns access to a specific slot as an object of type LocalDataStoreSlot. You can then use the Thread object s GetData() and SetData() methods to get and set data in that slot. While this is a bit more complex than dealing with a conventional collection, you can think of named slots as being like a collection of arbitrary values associated with a Thread object. When running in ASP .NET, things are a bit simpler, because HttpContext has an Items collection. This is a dictionary of name/value pairs that is automatically maintained by ASP .NET and is available to your code. Within ASP .NET, this is the only safe place to put shared data like context data, because ASP .NET may switch your code to run on different threads in certain advanced scenarios.

A markup language is a set of tags placed in a document to give information about the information in the document. That is, the markup tags are not the data of the document they contain data about the data. Data about data is called metadata. A markup language is a defined set of tags designed to convey particular types of metadata about the contents of a document. HTML, for example, is the most widely known markup language. The metadata in its tags contains information about how a web page should be rendered in a browser, and how to navigate among the pages using the hypertext links. While most markup languages contain a predefined set of tags XML contains only a few defined tags, and the rest are defined by the programmer to represent whatever kinds of metadata are required by a particular document type. As long as the writer and reader of the data agree on what the tags mean, the tags can contain whatever useful information the designers want.
