Figure 18-2. The structure of the export table group In an unmanaged PE file, the EAT contains the RVA of the exported unmanaged methods. In a managed PE file, the picture is more complicated. The EAT cannot contain the RVA of the managed methods because it s not the managed methods that are exported rather, it s their marshaling thunks, generated at run time. The only way to address a yet-to-be-created thunk is to define a slot in a v-table entry for the exported managed method and a VTableFixup descriptor for this entry, carrying the fromunmanaged flag. In this case, the contents of the v-table slot (a token of the exported method) are replaced at run time with the address of the marshaling thunk. (If the fromunmanaged flag is not specified, the thunk is not created, and the method token is replaced with this method s address; but this is outside the scenario being discussed.) For each exported method, the IL assembler creates a tiny native stub yes, you ve caught me: the IL assembler does produce embedded native code after all consisting of the

A fair number of validation rules are of the toggle variety: required fields, fields that must be a certain length (no longer than, no shorter than), fields that must be greater than or less than other fields, and so forth. The common theme is that validation rules, when broken, immediately make the object invalid. In short, an object is valid if no rules are broken but is invalid if any rules are broken. Rather than trying to implement a custom scheme in each business object in order to keep track of which rules are broken and whether the object is or isn t valid at any given point, this behavior can be abstracted. Obviously, the rules themselves are often coded into an application, but the tracking of which rules are broken and whether the object is valid can be handled by the framework.

Allowing a readonly field to be modified during object construction is a useful feature. It means that you can create a per-instance constant value, which depends on the way in which your object was constructed. In Listing 7-15, the instances of Product each had a constant field with a different constant value. Once constructed, the object cannot change the value assigned this field, which can be useful for avoiding inadvertent modifications.

Figure 1-8. A highly available MSMQ architecture Once the message has been placed in the outgoing queue, a listener picks it up and processes it from there. In this architecture, the queue listener extracts the body of the message and posts it to SQLXML as a SOAP request for a Web Service. This facility is built into SQLXML. Any stored procedure can easily be exposed with SQLXML listening for incoming SOAP requests and automatically mapping them to the database stored procedure. After the database work is complete, a response message may be prepared, depending on whether the request was synchronous or not. For asynchronous requests, a fire and forget model is used, and so no response message is necessary. One major benefit of this architecture is that other non-web applications could leverage the same MSMQ infrastructure (i.e., Windows Services, BizTalk Orchestration). The initiating application need only know how to generate the transaction XML, and then throw it in the queue. The listener takes over from there.

Consider using dynamic types in the following situations: When working with COM, dynamic types allow a more concise syntax (we saw this earlier). Let the DLR do the work figuring out how to bind your method and property calls. When interacting with a dynamic language such as IronPython. When working with objects that have changing structures, such as HTML or XML documents (we will look at this shortly).

If you review the use cases, you should find that the objects can be used to accomplish all of the tasks and processes described in the following list: Users can get a list of projects. Users can add a project. Users can edit a project. Users can remove a project. Users can get a list of resources. Users can add a resource. Users can edit a resource. Users can remove a resource. Users can assign a resource to a project (and vice versa). When a resource is assigned to a project, users can specify the role the resource will play on the project.
