A method is a member that implements an action that can be performed by an object. In this chapter, we will explore C# methods and see how they form the essential core of a C# program. In short, without methods, there could be no C# programs, and understanding how to define and use methods is essential to becoming an effective and productive C# programmer. This chapter is relatively long because methods are such an important topic and there are many language features that relate to their use. To make it easier to understand methods, I start with a quick tour of the basic features and then dig down into the detail of each. Toward the end of the chapter, I describe some special kinds of method, the most important of which is the constructor. You will use some of these special method types in every program you create, so an understanding of what they are and how they work can be very important. There are a lot of examples in this chapter, and you may want to download the source code that accompanies this book so that you don t have to type them all in. The source code is available for free at Apress.com. Table 9-1 provides the summary for this chapter. Table 9-1. Quick Problem/Solution Reference for 9

In order to correctly determine CPU and I/O cost, we can trace the execution of a function or package. Then we can use tkprof output figures to determine the CPU time and number of I/O operations. When we figure out the required CPU time per execution, we can use the DBMS_ODCI.ESTIMATE_CPU_UNITS function to convert the CPU time per execution to the approximate number of CPU instructions. The returned number is defined as thousands of instructions. In the following case, we will calculate the CPU cost for a function that always executes in 0.002 seconds: SQL> variable a number SQL> begin :a := 1000*DBMS_ODCI.ESTIMATE_CPU_UNITS(0.002);end; 2 / PL/SQL procedure successfully completed. // wait for input before exiting Console.WriteLine("Press enter to finish"); Console.ReadLine(); } } In this example, I have used the checked keyword to surround a block of code statements. Every explicit numeric conversion inside the checked block will be examined at runtime. Compiling and running the code in Listing 5-7 produces the following results: Unhandled Exception: System.OverflowException: Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow. at Listing 07.Main(String[] args) in C:\Listing 07\Listing 07.cs:line 9 Press any key to continue . . . You can also use the checked keyword to apply overflow checking to a single statement, as demonstrated by Listing 5-8. I use this C# feature most when I am dealing with numeric data that the user has entered; it allows me to validate my assumptions about the kind of numbers they are using. Listing 5-8. Using the checked Keyword with a Single Statement using System; class Listing 08 { static void Main(string[] args) { short s = 500; byte b = checked((byte)s); // print out the values Console.WriteLine("Original value: {0}", s); Console.WriteLine("Explicitly converted value: {0}", b); // wait for input before exiting Console.WriteLine("Press enter to finish"); Console.ReadLine(); } } When using the checked keyword in this way, we use the parentheses to denote the start and end of the checked region, rather than the braces ({}) used to apply overflow checking for a block of statements. The checked statement in Listing 5-8 is shown in bold. You can use the unchecked keyword to disable overflow checking, and you can nest checked and unchecked blocks of code, as follows: checked { short s = 500; byte b = (byte)s; unchecked {

One of the easiest ways to parallelize your application is by using the Parallel Loop construct. Two types of loop can be run in parallel: Parallel.For() Parallel.ForEach()

The property editors are attached to the appropriate property by means of an attribute: Editor(typeof(docLibSelector), typeof(UITypeEditor)). The first type (docLibSelector) is the name of the class we ll build as our editor. The second type is always UITypeEditor. We ll cover these a little more when we actually build the editors. The next thing we need to take care of is overriding the Execute method. Again, we saw this in 5 so I won t go into a lot of detail about the mechanics of executing activities; I ll just give you the code in Listing 8-10. At a high level, this code uses the properties to retrieve the ruleset document from the SharePoint document library as XML. It deserializes that XML to create a ruleset object and then executes that ruleset. Listing 8-10. Code to Retrieve and Execute Our External Ruleset protected override ActivityExecutionStatus Execute( ActivityExecutionContext context) { string sFullURL = this.SourceSiteURL + @"/" + this.DocumentLibrary + @"/" + this.RuleSetName + ".ruleset"; WorkflowMarkupSerializer serializer = new WorkflowMarkupSerializer(); XmlUrlResolver resolver = new XmlUrlResolver(); System.Net.NetworkCredential myCredentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential( "Administrator", "password", "Mossb2tr");

SmartDate can translate dates the other way as well, such as converting a DateTime field into a String and retaining the concept of an empty date. Again, an optional parameter controls whether an empty date represents the smallest or the largest possible date. Another parameter controls the format of the date as it s converted to a String. Table 5-5 illustrates the results for various inputs. Table 5-5. Results of the DateToString Method Based on Various Inputs
