to enlisting the DTC in a transaction. Your application, the DTC, and the database engine(s) all need to interact throughout the transactional process to ensure that a consistent commit or rollback occurs, and this interaction takes time. Historically, you had to pick one transactional approach for your application. This often meant using distributed transactions even when they weren t required and paying that performance cost. The new System.Transactions namespace offers a compromise through the TransactionScope object. It starts out using nondistributed transactions (like those used in ADO.NET), and thus offers high performance for most applications. However, as soon as your code uses a second database within a transaction, TransactionScope automatically enlists the DTC to protect the transaction. This means you get the benefits of distributed transactions when you need them, but you don t pay the price for them when they aren t needed. The data portal allows the developer to specify which transactional technology to use for each of a business object s data access methods. To do this, the message router portion of the data portal uses some extra classes, as shown in Figure 4-4. Notice that this is basically the same diagram as Figure 4-3, but with extra types to support the transactional technologies.

/ Table created. It you think about it, the value of OWNER is repeated many hundreds of times. Each schema (OWNER) tends to own lots of objects. Even the value pair of OWNER,OBJECT_TYPE repeats many times, so a given schema will have dozens of tables, dozens of packages, and so on. Only all three columns together do not repeat. We can have Oracle suppress these repeating values. Instead of having an index block with values shown in Table 10-1, we could use COMPRESS 2 (factor out the leading two columns) and have a block with the values shown in Table 10-2. Table 10-1. In examining the ASPX markup, the class that gets generated from it, and the code-behind that it compiles with, we ve looked at all of the types that have the Page object in their inheritance trees. This is where code for the least general functionality goes. The code of the Page object itself is then the first class in the object graph that contains general functionality. This is familiar territory, as it s leveraged to create every ASP .NET page. We re talking about the Init and Load events of the Page type, the various server-side event traps, like Button.Click or TextBox.TextChanged, you can set up to trap events as they occur on the client. The Page level events, however, aren t specific to the Page type. If you follow the inheritance chain of the Page class up, you ll find the old familiar Control type. System.Web.UI.Control is the base type for every element you put on a web page. It s a base type for HTML Controls, for Web Controls, for User Controls, and for Custom Controls. It s very interesting to note that it s also a base type for the Page class itself. This means that the properties and methods of this type are exposed on practically everything you interact with programmatically on your page and on your Page object as well. Thus, understanding what s housed within this type is learning you can leverage everywhere in your development of Web Forms. Table 3-1. A Sample of Members from System.Web.UI.Control

Oracle finds this method scalable enough to run all of their TPC-Cs (an industry standard OLTP benchmark; see http://www.tpc.org for details). In many other implementations, you will find this being achieved with shared read locks and their corresponding deadlocks, and blocking. In Oracle, we do not get any blocking, but we will get the ORA-08177 error if other sessions change the data we want to change as well. However, we will not get the error as frequently as we will get deadlocks and blocks in the other systems. But there is always a but you must take care to understand these different isolation levels and their implications. Remember, with isolation set to SERIALIZABLE, you will not see any changes made in the database after the start of your transaction, until you commit. Applications that attempt to enforce their own data integrity constraints, such as the resource scheduler described in 1 Developing Successful Oracle Applications , must take extra care in this regard. If you recall, the problem in 1 was that we could not enforce our integrity constraint in a multiuser system since we could not see changes made by other uncommitted sessions. Using SERIALIZABLE, we would still not see the uncommitted changes, but we would also not see the committed changes made after our transaction began! As a final point, be aware that SERIALIZABLE does not mean that all transactions executed by users will behave as if they were executed one right after another in a serial fashion. It does not imply that there is some serial ordering of the transactions that will result in the same outcome. The phenomena previously described by the SQL standard do not make this happen. This last point is a frequently misunderstood concept, and a small demonstration will clear it up. The following table represents two sessions performing work over time. The database tables A and B start out empty and are created as follows: ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> create table a ( x int ); Table created. ops$tkyte@ORA11GR2> create table b ( x int ); Table created.
