You can also apply AspectJ to implement existing object-oriented design patterns such as factory and visitor. Such usage results in a clean and reusable implementation of those patterns. For more details on this usage of AspectJ, please refer to and the Resources section at the back of this book.

interpret these files. You could try to write your own SVG handler (as was done in the first edition of this book), but it s easier to use a library that already exists, such as Apache Batik. This listing creates the map without the optional content layers.

Imagine a program that uses an image as a background, sets up a web view on top of that, and has a label running above everything. We ll show you how easy it is to create those entirely usable objects in Interface Builder. You ll find the Image View object under Data Views in the Library. Drag it over to your main window, and it ll quickly resize to suggest a full-screen layout. You should be able to arrange it to fit exactly over the screen, and then release your mouse button to let it go. One object created! The Web View object is right under the Image View. Drag it over to the main window. If you move it toward the center of the view, you ll see dashed lines appear: they re intended to help you center your object. If you mouse over the middle of the screen, a dashed line will appear in each direction, forming a sort of crosshairs. When that happens, release the mouse button you now have a web view in the middle of the screen. Two objects created! Finally, select Label, which is under Inputs & Values. Drag it toward the top left of your screen, and let go. You re done! You now have three objects laid out in Interface Figure 12.3 A few seconds of work results in three objects ready for use in Interface Builder. Builder, as shown in figure 12.3.
Not only does this give an example to fit into our discussion about dependency property mappings, it is also illustrative of the versions of software that we used for our project, many of which put us on the bleeding edge.1 Figure 8.2 shows how the version number property works in conjunction with the directory property mappings. We minimize the effort to install a new version of, say, Lucene, by placing full distributions into our lib directory, in their normal directory structure. Figure 8.2 shows the standard distribution directory structures of both Lucene and Struts. They differ; we account for this with our.subdir property. Table 8.1 describes each of these propeties. With these properties, build files do not need to know the directory structure of a library distribution. This defends our projects against products which change packaging from version to version: we can just change a property or two and everything works again.
Eagle-eyed readers may be saying at this point, Hold on, in previous sections we saw binds working against conditions and loops, yet they aren t in themselves expressions! Well, you d be wrong if you thought that. In JavaFX Script they are expressions! But a full exploration of this will have to wait until next chapter.
With the way that we designed the script, we can have multiple type-ahead select elements on the page. We just need to add declarations with new calls to SetProperties() for each element. The downside to this method is that in order to have different values fill in the drop-down, we would have to reference different server-side pages. In most cases we will be fine with this, but the only difference between these methods is most likely the SQL statement. We can come up with an elaborate solution to this problem by adding an additional parameter to our custom object and sending it to the server. Another option is to work with what we have now so that we can make a minimum number of changes to our code. In this case, the simple solution involves changing one line in our code and adding an if statement on the server-side code. The goal is to be able to somehow differentiate between the elements on the server to determine which element has caused the postback. A simple way to tell the difference is to use the name that is on the element. In this case, we ll reference the name of our textbox. In listing 10.20, we alter the parameter string to allow for this new functionality.
Even this doesn t give you sufficient granularity, however. Different queries may require different query expiration policies. Hibernate allows you to specify a different named cache region for each query:
