POSTNET

United States Postal Service often use a barcode symbology the POSTNET, which is also called Postal Numeric Encoding Technique to help in directing mail. Half- and full-height bars encode the ZIP Code or ZIP+4 code, as a rule, the delivery point is usually added to be the last two digits of the address or PO Box number.
A full bar which is called a guard rail or frame bar and regard as the letter "S" in one version of the USPS TrueType Font always present at the start and final position of the barcode. After the ZIP, ZIP+4, the barcode has a check digit or delivery point.
It is a set of five bars, two of which are full bars (i.e. two-out-of-five code), that represent each individual digit. The full bars represent "on" bits in a pseudo-binary code where the places represent, from left to right: 7, 4, 2, 1, 0. (Though in this plan, we often use 11 decimal, or "binary" 11000 to encode zero)
Example
A 6 digit (plus check digit) is referred to as a "B" code and it can include the ZIP Code' last 2 digits as well as the 4 digits of the ZIP+4 Code 37 bars total. The mail that had been coded only with a 5-digit "A" code is used to be "upgraded" by processing the B code in early days when the Postal automated mail is popular. This barcode now is obsolete just because it can be only found on mail that received a 5-digit barcode on the initial coding by an OCR.
