UPC-A

Background information

The UPC, the Universal Product Code, is a specific kind of barcode symbology. It is primarily used in North America and also in other countries such as the UK, New Zealand and Australia for tracking trade items in department stores. The UPC-A, which is its commonest form, is made up of 12 numerical digits attached to each trade item. Besides, the UPC is the only barcode permitted to scan trade items at the point of sale together with the EAN barcode. All of these data structures have to be in accordance with the global GS1 standards.

Components

The composition of UPC-A is very interesting. Based on a sequence of 12 numerical digits, a strip of black bars and white spaces that can be scanned is included in each UPC-A barcode. In addition, Any kind of letters, characters or other content is not allowed to be seen on a standard UPC-A barcode. What is crucial is that there is only one way to mark each 12-digit number visually, and there is only one way to represent each visual barcode numerically.

Numbering

There is no wonder that in theory a maximum of 1 trillion unique barcodes is provided by UPC-A and UPC-E. Nevertheless, in fact, the standards which are used to create them have limited the number of barcodes. Here is how it goes: UPC-A: (10 possible values per digit ^ 6 left digits) กม (10 possible values per digit ^ 6 right digits) = 1,000,000 กม 1,000,000 = 1,000,000,000,000. UPC-E: 10 possible values per digit ^ 2 possible parities per digit ^ 6 digits = 100 permutations per digits ^ 6 digits = 1,000,000,000,000

Formatting

A visual binary code is used to present information by the UPC-A barcode. A black or a white space represents each bit and mommonly a complete UPC includes 95 bits, of which 84 encode digits and 11 encode guard bars. The bit pattern for each numeral is designed to be as small as possible like others, and to have no more than four consecutive bars or spaces. Both features are intended to ensure that there is great reliability in scanning.
