    Intelligent Mail

    Background information

Intelligent Mail refers to a 65-bar code used for mailing in the U.S.A. It is designed to offer greater information and functionality than Postnet and Planet. The United States Postal Service provides the services for domestic mail delivery. At the same time, known as One Code Solution and 4-State Customer Barcode, IM incorporates the routing ZIP code and tracking information in great effect. It is clear that the complete specification can be found in USPS Document. The use of Intelligent Mail will be required by the Postal Service to make the automation prices qualified by the beginning of May 2011. The benefits are incredible such as new services, increased overall efficiency and the improved deliver-ability.

    Structure

Considered as a height-modulated barcode, the Intelligent Mail is able to encode a maximum number of 31 decimal digits of mail-piece data into 65 vertical bars. Four distinct symbols make up of the code and each bar includes the central tracker portion. An ascender and a descender may be contained. In a word, the barcode may carry a data payload of 31 digits.

    Identifier of the barcode

Typically, USPS will assign the Barcode Identifier to encode the presort identification which is at the present printed in human readable form. This can be seen on the optional endorsement line and it is also used for future USPS use. Two digits can be found with second digit in the range of 0-4. The acceptable encoding order should be 00-04, 20-24, 30-34, 40-44, 50-54,60-64, 70-74, 80-84, and 90-94.

    Mailer ID

A six or nine-digit number, which is allocated by the USPS, can identify the particular business that sends the mails. One thing that needs to be noticed is that all six-digit IDs begin with a digit between 0 and 8 while all nine-digit IDs start with the digit 9 so as to distinguish six-digit IDs from nine-digit IDs.
