ISBN

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN), based on the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code, is a unique numeric commercial book identifier .

The 10-digit ISBN format was improved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO 2108. At present, the ISO's TC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the ISBN.

Since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have possessed 13 digits, which is compatible with Bookland EAN-13s.

Sometimes a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed in private or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure; however, this is later rectified as usual.

An ISBN is allocated to each edition and variation (except reprintings) of a book. The ISBN is 13 digits long if allocated after January 1, 2007, and 10 digits long if allocated before 2007. An International Standard Book Number contains 4 or 5 parts:

for a 13-digit ISBN, a GS1 prefix: 978 or 979 (demonstrating the industry; in this case, 978 denotes book publishing)
the group identifier, (language-sharing country group)
the publisher code
the item number(title of the book)
a checksum character or check digit

The ISBN separates its parts (group, publisher, title and check digit) with either a hyphen or a space. Apart from the check digit, no part of the ISBN will have a fixed number of digits.
