After you have created a group, you can select an individual object in the group by doing one of the following: Select the Subselection tool and click the object you want to select Select the Pointer tool, hold down the Alt key, and click the object you want to select If you have objects underneath other objects in a group, you can select them by holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys while right-clicking to cycle through the objects in the group To ungroup objects, follow these steps: 1 Select the object group with the Pointer tool 2 Choose Modify Ungroup The group is disbanded, and you can now edit each object individually After you create a group, you can nest another object or group by selecting the object or group, selecting the object or group you want to nest the item in, and then choosing Modify Group

When you add objects to an illustration, they are stacked on top of each other, and the objects on top of the stack in a layer eclipse the objects below You can change the stacking order of objects at any time by following these steps: 1 Use the Pointer or Subselection tool to select the object whose order in the stack you want to rearrange 2 Choose Modify Arrange and choose one of the following commands from the submenu: Bring to Front: Moves the selected object to the front of the stack Move Forward: Moves the selected object ahead of the next object in the stack Move Backward: Moves the selected object behind the next lower object in the stack Send to Back: Moves the selected object to the back of the stack After applying one of the Arrange commands, the object s order in the stacking layer is changed

When you use the Arrange command, you modify the stacking order on the drawing layer If there are layers above or below the drawing layer (the currently selected layer), objects on those layers will affect the overall appearance of your illustration In order to achieve the desired result, you may have to move the object to another layer For more information on layers, see Book VI, 2 You can also modify the stacking order by cutting or copying an object, selecting an object in the document, and then choosing Edit Special Paste in Front or choosing Edit Special Paste Behind Note that this changes the stacking order, but not the position of the pasted object

When you have several objects in a document, you may need to align them This is a fairly easy process using FreeHand s object chiropractor: the Align panel You use the Align panel to align objects to each other or to the document You can also use the Align panel to distribute objects relative to the other objects in the selection or relative to the document When you choose one of the distribution options, the objects are spaced equally You can also use the panel to align points along a path To align objects, follow these steps: 1 Use the Pointer or Subselection tool to select the objects or points you want to align 2 Choose Window Align The Align and Transform panel, shown in Figure 4-6, appears, open to the Align tab The tab consists of two drop-down lists on the right and a preview window on the left The preview window gives you an abstract visual representation of the currently selected options The preview window has nine squares in the center and four mitered edges You can align the objects by double-clicking one of these squares or mitered edges For example, if you double-click the mitered edge at the top of the window, objects are aligned to the top; double-click the mitered edge on the left side, and objects are aligned to the left If you double-click the square in the top-right corner, objects are aligned to the top and right; double-click the square in the center, and objects are aligned to the center The drop-down lists update to match the preview window Likewise, when you select options from the drop-down lists, the preview window updates to display an idealized representation of the chosen list option The following steps walk you through selecting the options
