When you add text to a document, FreeHand uses the default Normal Text style to format the text You can modify the text by using menu commands or the Object tab in the Properties panel; however, the changes apply only to the block of text you are creating If you re creating a document with lots of text that spans different pages, formatting each new block of text can become a nuisance, especially when they re all the same After you decide on text formatting options for a document, you can save the formatting as a style, which you can then apply to any block of text with a click of the mouse To create a text style, follow these steps: 1 Select the Text tool from the Tools panel and create a block of text 2 Format the text using the font style, size, and other attributes that will remain constant throughout the document 3 Choose Window Styles or press Shift+F11 The Styles tab of the Assets panel, shown in Figure 3-7, opens

4 Click the Options button (the bulleted list icon in the upper-right corner of the panel) and choose New from the Options menu A new entry, in the form of a box with Aa in the middle of it, appears in the Styles tab In the Object tab of the Properties panel, you ll see that the style is given the default name Style, appended by the next available style number (Style-1, for example) If you re creating more than one style for the document, you can rename the style to better reflect what the style applies to After you create a text style, you can apply the style to any text box on any page in your document To apply a text style, follow these steps: 1 Select the block of text to which you want to apply a style 2 Choose Window Styles or press Shift+F11 The Styles tab of the Assets panel opens, and all styles currently in use for the document are displayed 3 Click the name of the style you want applied to the text The text is formatted to the style s parameters In FreeHand MX, renaming a style is a bit more complicated than it was in previous versions By default, items in the Styles tab are shown in Previews only format, which is to say they show a small preview of the style itself To rename a style, you must first change the layout of the styles to either Compact list views or Large list views by clicking the Options button (the bulleted text icon in the top right of the Assets panel) and selecting a layout option After this is complete, you can double-click your style, enter a name for it, and press Enter to save it
