You use the Pen tool to create free-form vector objects The Pen tool gives you point-to-point control over the shape you create You can use the Pen tool to create an open path or a closed path (the beginning and ending points meet to create an outline) You can even use the Pen tool to trace an image on another layer (We show you how to add layers to a document in the upcoming section, Working with Layers ) To create a shape with the Pen tool, follow these steps: 1 Select the Pen tool from the Tools panel 2 Click the place in the document where you want to add the first point When you click, you create a straight point; if you click and drag, you create a curve point Create a straight point when you want to create a straight line segment, a curve point when you want a curved line segment 3 Click the spot where you want the second point to appear Remember to click and drag if you want a curve point A curve point has handles that you use to modify a curved line segment You modify handles with the Pointer tool or with the Subselection tool The Subselection tool the white-headed arrow at the top right of the Tools palette is covered in detail in Book VI, 4 4 Continue adding points to define your shape You can double-click the Pen tool icon to select the Show Pen Preview option, which provides a preview of the path that will be created when you make the next point 5 To complete an open path, double-click to define the last point; to complete a closed path, click the first point Your shape is finished Now you can use the Pen tool to create another shape or to modify the shape that you just created
