ho are the elderly It s a moving definition because more and more people are living longer and remaining healthier for a longer time For the purposes of this chapter, I consider the start of elder years to be age 65 The elderly are growing in numbers In the year 2000, one in eight Americans were elderly, but by 2030, one in five (about 70 million) Americans will fit that category In addition to the growing population, the number of people living past 100 years of age is also climbing So, over the next 30 years, the concerns of the elderly will become a major challenge throughout the world Don t be surprised if bathing suit ads start featuring 70-year-old grandmothers instead of 17-year-old girls!
