Low sex drive (also known as low libido) is more common than many men would like to believe You may always have had low libido, or your sexual desire may have gone down gradually or quickly over time In the normal course of events, after a peak in the teens and early twenties libido normally reduces slowly over the years although quite a bit of variation exists between men For some men as well as their partners, low libido may not be a problem Others may worry or notice that it affects their relationship, thinking that partners don t find them attractive anymore If you suffer from low libido, go through the following list to see whether any of these potential causes may apply to you: Alcohol: Consuming larger amounts of alcohol can severely impact on your sex drive Although small amounts of alcoholic drinks may help increase your sexual desire, drinking more than the recommended limit is often a turn-off , so try to reduce your alcohol intake or, ideally, stop drinking for a while: things usually return to normal quickly If you find stopping difficult or you want to know more about alcohol-related problems, read 23, and consider discussing further management options with your GP Depression and anxiety: Feeling low or anxious is bound to affect your sex life When you don t feel well particularly if you don t feel good about yourself you re less likely to feel enthusiastic about sex You can do a lot to help if you feel this way checking out 21 is a good start, where you can discover how to spot the signs of depression and anxiety, and what you can do to improve your situation If you re still concerned and things don t improve, visit your GP for further assessment and treatment Lack of hormones: Your sex drive is affected by levels of the hormone testosterone in your blood Although a fairly rare cause of loss of libido, your GP can diagnose a lack of hormones easily with a simple blood test, and treatment is fairly straightforward Testosterone deficiency can also cause these other symptoms, although they don t necessarily mean that you re suffering from lack of hormones: You feel tired all the time You have problems with erections

You put on weight for no reason You feel low in yourself and have little energy You find concentrating difficult You get hot flushes or sweat increasingly You lose body hair and your skin changes in some way Medication: Taking tablets regularly for a medical condition may well have an impact on your sex drive Common culprits are blood pressure lowering drugs, antidepressants, water tablets (known as diuretics) and drugs used for the treatment of epilepsy or anxiety Often this problem is mild, but if you find that you lose interest in sex after taking a particular pill and the problem doesn t get better with time or is severe check the drug information leaflet or speak to your pharmacist or GP They may be able to suggest an alternative type of medication for you Natural causes : If you ve always had a low sex drive or you lost interest in sex gradually over time, this situation may just be normal for you and it doesn t have to mean that you can t enjoy sex anymore Speak to your GP or consider arranging an appointment with a sex counsellor Relationship problems: Unhappiness in a relationship and any issues causing trouble between you and your partner may well affect your desire to have sex Losing interest in sex to a certain extent is also normal when the novelty effect of being in a new relationship wears off Sexual difficulties: Any form of sexual problem can reduce your desire for sex Examples include erection problems and premature ejaculation (check out the earlier sections, Tackling problems with erections and Dealing with premature ejaculation , respectively) or your partner suffering from a dry vagina due to the menopause (turn to 18 for more details on problems that your partner may be experiencing) Sexual orientation: If you find that you don t feel attracted to women anymore but get aroused by men, your sexual orientation may have changed or you may have only just recognised this fact You ve nothing to worry about if you re happy with this development, but you and perhaps other people around you may find adjusting to your new situation difficult Speak to your GP for advice on getting help and support Tiredness and stress: If you re stressed at work or at home, have too much on your mind or don t get enough sleep, your libido is likely to be affected (turn to 21 for more on the problems that stress can cause) Chat to your partner and see whether you can both take action to get you back on track again: you may need to take some time off work, do something nice together, reduce some of your activities or make other changes to your lifestyle If you re still concerned or things don t get better, consult your GP
